Tokyo: Tsukiji Food Walk & Sumo Training with Chanko Meal

3 hours and 30 minutes

Easy

Explore Tsukiji's outer market with a guide, then train with a former sumo wrestler. Enjoy a chanko stew, the protein-heavy meal sumo wrestlers eat, after your training session.
Meet your guide in front of the Lawson convenience store at Tsukiji Outer Market and set off on a guided food walk. Spend 90 minutes exploring the market with your guide, who will help you choose and order food from the stalls. Choose what to try and pay at each stall yourself. Your guide will tell you how much room to leave, because chanko comes later. Next, travel about 30 minutes to a training facility in the Yurakucho area, on foot and/or by public transport. Change into training wear provided free of charge, and meet your instructor, a former professional sumo wrestler. Learn the fundamentals of sumo wrestling, including how a wrestler stands, grips, and moves, and why. Learn shiko, the foot-stomping exercise at the core of every wrestler's daily routine, taught with attention to proper form. Then, join the drills, finishing with butsukari-geiko: charging and pushing directly against your instructor. Throw everything you have at a former pro and feel how little he moves. After your training, enjoy a chanko meal, the protein-heavy stew sumo wrestlers live on, served at the facility. Eating chanko in the room you just trained in is how wrestlers spend their days.
